Saving the future
The IPCC report provides many ways to adapt and mitigate against the worst of the projections. For Australia, the key is to reduce CO2 emissions from the consumption of fossil fuels and land use change (clearing of forests). Energy consumption per capita has fallen in recent times due to the adoption of more energy efficient appliances and lighting systems and the adoption of solar PV roof top systems and the large scale investment in wind and solar farms.

The top ways to reduce your carbon footprint

As an individual, what is the single, most important thing I can do in the face of climate change? Generally, there are four lifestyle choices that can make a major difference: eat less or no meat, forego air travel, go electric or ditch your car, and have fewer children.

Gympie Solar Community Assn is tackling the use of fossil fuels. The adoption of renewable energy for electricity generation and the electrification of the transport system using renewable energy will displace fossil fuels from the energy and transport systems. The technology for this now exists and is increasingly used in some jurisdictions. Solar PV rooftop systems are readily available, very cost effective with the electricity generated costing about 5 cents per kWh at Gympie. Gympie has a high solar irradiation level, vast rooftops and car parks that could all be used to generate electricity.
